Ruger Precision 300 - At the end of 2018, the US Department of Defense announced a new sniper rifle cartridge, the Hornady .300 PRC or Precision Rifle Cartridge. Soon, Barrett will be contracted to provide MRAD at this new location.

Less than a year has passed since the .300 PRC was approved by SAAMI, and the cartridge that appears to be a success has been shrouded in mystery. Very few consumer-grade guns and rare ammunition have kept them out of the mass consumer market. That is, until now.

The latest addition to Ruger's Magnum Precision Rifle (RPR) lineup aims to change this for the consumer market. So I was curious to see if this new cartridge would live up to the hype in a budget-friendly gun.

For those unfamiliar with the RPR series of rifles, a few key features set the Ruger apart from most factory bolt-action rifles. A complete list of product features and specifications can be found on the Ruger website.

The most popular feature on the RPR is the adjustable folding stock. Factory stock with adjustable pull and comb height. Located at the bottom of the stock is the Picatinny rail if you decide to mount a single rear tripod.

This flat surface also helps to produce accurate shots when using the back pocket for shooting or resting. The stock assembly is housed in an AR-15-style castle for easy customization by the end user.

Inside the back of the bolt assembly is an Allen wrench to adjust the trigger. This makes for quick and easy adjustments in the field and is the right combination of form and function.

Adjusting the trigger is easy to do and requires no additional weapon removal. Simply insert the wrench into the slot shown above and rotate it left to reduce trigger weight or right to increase weight.

RPR magnum ships with two AI-style five-ring steel magazines. You will notice the magazines are stamped .300 Winchester Magnum. This is because the .300 PRC uses the common .532" large bolt face and has the same housing size.

The RPR Magnum Series also includes Ruger's new Magnum Muzzle Brake. This has four upper compensation doors that can be opened to adjust the muzzle height compensation. It's large but looks like home on the end of a heavily contoured crate.

Using the .375 Ruger as the main shell, the .300 PRC is designed to take advantage of the longer and heavier rounds of the 30 type. The PRC uses a combination of high-ballistic and 30-degree shoulder rounds. used to create the right combination of speed and accuracy.

Ruger Precision Rifle Magnum .300 Win Mag

The new Hornady cartridge looks like it will bridge the gap between outdated calibers like the .300 Winchester Magnum and the .338 Lapua Magnum. The 225-grain ELD-Match bullet leaves the barrel at 2,810 FPS with an astonishing 3,945 ft/lb.

It is important to note that the RPR Magnum is not a light rifle and weighs 15.2 lbs without lenses and accessories. This works in your favor with 0.300 PRC. 300 PRC has higher recoil than Win Mag 300 but still worse than .338 Lapua Mag.

After placing a few groups down 100 yards, I let the barrel cool before firing the three groups above.

On average in the three groups I shot, the rifle hit about 0.6 MOA. I'm sure it would beat the better groups, but since ammo was limited for this review I decided the above group was enough for the data I needed.

Shooting RPR Magnum from a distance is easy using Hornady's free calculator. Two days after taking the gun off, I decided to take it out 1,050 yards at one of my favorite shooting ranges.

In poor conditions, I was able to make consecutive hits on the 24-inch steel diamond. With a suppressed gun you can really gauge how much energy the bullet carries over a distance.

After a couple of weeks of bad weather, I went back to my old location to test another suppressor from SIG. After sending only a few laps from the tripod, it became clear that the RPR Magnum was almost too accurate at this distance.

With the gun fired at a distance of thousands of yards, I had only one thing left to do with the remaining ammo: Increase the distance. I drove around Utah's Western Desert looking for a place before deciding on one on the edge of the Salt Flats. The targets will be a stack of three five-gallon buckets at 1,950 Yard (1.1 Miles).

My shooting location will be the foothills, located in the upper right corner of the photo above. I mark this spot and then use the pointer from the target to the preset marker to determine the distance.

My initial blast of fire landed on either side of the target as I tried to figure out the shifting crosshairs. I decided to submit the first round, quickly play the second round, then recommend a second round based on initial performance. More than three seconds after firing the first shot, I watched the impact land up and to the right. I quickly fire a second shot towards the bottom left, and add another three seconds to watch the bucket in the middle descend.

Using the fancy reticle on the Nightforce NXS, the round lands evenly into the center barrel. My plan to get the bullet from the bucket full of water would be in vain. After looking at the data, it became clear that these Wal-Mart boxes didn't stand a chance.

With a suggested price of $2,099, the Ruger RPR Magnum is the perfect combination of power and performance. Ruger has properly combined modern features to make it an incredible value for the price. This coupled with the outstanding performance reduction makes it the standard for entry-level precision rifles.

Meet The Ruger Precision Rifle: Just How Accurate Is It?

The biggest problem with the RPR in the .300 PRC is the cost and availability of ammo. Currently, there are only two types of ammo available from Hornady and none are cheap. Prices are coming down, but you should pay around two dollars a round for 0.300 PRC.

Also, I had to double check with the silencer manufacturers Dead Air and SIG Sauer before firing the .300 PRC through their products. Like the .300 Norma, the .300 PRC is a notable step up in the case of higher pressures from the .300 Win Mag. If you have a 300 Win Mag rated silencer, you should double check it is rated 0.300 PRC before using it. Luckily, I got a "good to go" hit in the .300 PRC through Dead Air's Nomad and SIG's SRD762Ti.

Throughout this review, I tried to find flaws in the Ruger Precision Rifle and came away empty-handed. Everything about the gun not only works, it works great. One could argue that elements like actions or triggers are not the most optimized and that should be fine. However, no other rifle can match the RPR Magnum in terms of price and quality. The gun and its quality exceeded my expectations. I think it's safe to say that the RPR Magnum series of rifles is the best gun for you in the current full-size rifle market.
