Real Tommy Gun - A few weeks ago we posted an article about the release of the Standard Production G4S rimfire rifle. Despite its modern appearance, the design elements of this rifle indicate that it is likely based on the Standard Manufacturing 1922, a scaled-down semi-automatic rimfire replica of the Thompson submachine gun. This started a discussion about Thompson SMG replicas in the comments section of that article, and one of our readers, Mike Johnson, posted the image posted above and commented: “
I wanted a 22 liter Tommy gun so I made my own. Thompson or Standard Manufacturing should have done it. 10/22 uses fire control and magazines

". It seemed really interesting and interesting to both this writer and many TFB readers, so I asked Mike to share more details and pictures of the project and let me use the information to write an article about his Tommy gun. Mike kindly agree and today we will see how he designed and built this hot ghat.

It all started with a combination of parts that Mike had on hand that he thought were perfect to use in his Thompson submachine gun reproduction project. In particular, he had a genuine Thompson SMG stock he bought at a gun show ten years ago, and a box of spares contained several Ruger 10/22 parts (bolt, fire control group, various magazines).
With the decision to use said parts, Mike began designing the rest of the Tommy gun around them. Newly designed parts include upper and lower receivers, pistol grip and forend, trigger, muzzle device, rear sight screen and more. includes. Most of these parts are machined from solid blocks of material on the Haas Mini Mill. The exception is the rear sight screen, which is made by cutting a piece of rectangular steel tubing. The rear sight itself is a Williams sight.
The 10/22 trigger mechanism parts and the new trigger are held together in the original 10/22 trigger guard mounting housing, but Mike cut the trigger guard itself because the lower receiver he was working on had an integral trigger guard. This modification made the fire control group subassembly a 10/22 trigger that was inserted into the lower receiver of Mike's Tommy gun.
A Cutts pattern compensator is bolted and welded to the barrel for the 16.1-inch overall barrel length required by the rifle's legal definition. The original Tommy gun with Cutts compensator is about 12 inches long. Usually, increasing the barrel length of a replica firearm to meet legal requirements makes it look weird compared to the original. But as you can see, despite having a 4 inch longer barrel, Mike's gun doesn't appear out of proportion. How is it possible? Well, the trick is to create a sort of optical illusion by having a longer forearm, thus maintaining the same barrel-to-wrist length ratio as the original Thompson SMG. This is a pretty cool solution!
The Drum Gun Comes To Fortnite
Mike's Tommy gun replica looks really cool with the drum magazine. As you can see in the photo above, the curved 10/22 magazine does not look as good as the original Thompson submachine gun magazines are straight. Due to the design of the framed cartridge, it must be really hard to make a reliable high capacity .22LR magazine without this curve. If you want a magazine that looks like a Thompson SMG box magazine, a forged flat magazine housing with 10 round 10/22 mags attached might be the answer.
It's a really cool project, isn't it? Although many borrowed parts are used, this is still a very complex and advanced project that requires a lot of design and manufacturing skills to complete. Of course it's not a 100% exact copy in all the little details, but it looks really good for the amount of 10/22 parts used. This gun should also have plenty of customization potential with aftermarket 10/22 parts like bolts and trigger mechanism components. I believe that Mike's method of building a replica pistol with such extensive use of Ruger 10/22 parts can be used to make randfire replicas of many other historic firearms that are difficult to obtain due to their rarity and prohibitive costs.
I think someone should get the rights and start producing this gun. All the R&D work has already been done and only minor adjustments may be needed for production. That being said, it could probably be a relatively affordable weapon!? Let us know in the comments what price you think would be justified for such a weapon. What other firearms do you think could be replicated with 10/22 parts?

The device was used by Marines in the 1920s and 1930s. Among the more notorious users were gangsters such as Al Capone.
Jenkins City Mayor Todd DePriest said the item, which has a two-digit serial number, is made even rarer.
"As far as we can trace it back, it was bought from a consolidated coal company and shipped to a hardware store in Logan, West Virginia, and then brought to Jenkins by train. The story we've always been told is that it was used to protect wages when the money came in the train," he said.
DePriest said the city likely purchased the gun in the 1920s. Now the municipality's officials are putting the item up for auction. They said it was worth at least $75,000. They can sell the gun because it is registered.
Where To Buy A Tommy Gun
The gun will be stored safely until the special buyer arrives. You need three sets of keys to get the weapon. If sold, proceeds will benefit the Jenkins City Police Department.
"A lot of police equipment wears out and a lot of police cruisers have a lot of miles on them," DePriest said.
DePriest said they will use the gun money to match grant funding and buy new police equipment.
"It's too big and too heavy to carry around every day, and it's too precious to leave," DePriest said.
